Property Description

The Historic Star Theatre - Newly Remodeled Popular Performing Arts Theatre. Matinees and Catered Dinner Theatre events.

The Star Theatre originally opened in June, 1947. In 2004, a complete renovation was begun. The entire inside of the building as well as the roof was replaced. The theatre was restored in a manner reflecting the Art Deco style of the original structure. The total square footage of the building is 4,725 square feet, comprised of the main floor, partially finished basement and the balcony area. Building and lot dimensions are 40'6" x 78'6" with 40'6" fronting Patrick Avenue. The lobby area boasts stamped tin ceilings, ceramic tile floors and a color scheme true to the original. A level floor replaced the sloped floor of the theater so that movable tables and chairs could be used to provide more flexibility. Seating capacity for theatre shows is at 260 chairs. With tables and chairs, the theatre can seat 142. The floors of the theatre and balcony areas are of hardwood oak. A new sound and digital projection system has been installed. Three newly installed heat pumps provide heating and cooling.

The Star Theatre is in downtown Stuart, VA, located between the Downtown Cafe, which provides fine dining as well as catering services for the dinner theatre events, and the Bull Mountain Arts Cooperative, which houses an array of crafts and artwork by local artisans. On-street parking is available as well as access to two municipal parking lots.

The town of Stuart is nestled in the foothills of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, which is part of "The Crooked Road", attracting tourists to the area to appreciate the art, music and crafts associated with the Appalachian Mountains. The Crooked Road, also known as "Virginia's Heritage Music Trail", connects the Piedmont with the Cumberland Mountains along its 253 mile route. The Crooked Road partially follows along U.S. Highway 58 from east to west through the "birthplace" of traditional mountain music in southwest Virginia. It is along this route, where it crosses Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains at their highest peaks, where the term "The Crooked Road" originated.
